The Marías captivated us and made us sink deeper at the Houston show on July 24 during their Submarine Tour.
As a long-time fan, it is an understatement to say that I was excited to see that the band was coming to town again. With their latest album release, Submarine, released on May 31, I had made sure to memorize every lyric by the time the band hit the stage. The album, full of enchanting visuals and hypnotizing lyricism, was a 14-track masterpiece. A big part of the rollout for this release were all of the visual elements and aesthetics attached to the album, all curated by the band. It truly added to the excitement for the release of the album and fit perfectly once you got the first listen in. All in all, it was an album that many were excited to hear live.
With the show taking place at 713 Music Hall, a venue known for its amazing sound qualities and production, fans were ecstatic. The Marías' sold-out show filled the venue with roaring fans by the time the show began.
The stage was set up with a large white circle in the middle and stairs leading up to it. There was also a small side stage that had ground lighting to set the mood, with the band members spaced out on their respective risers. There was lots of haze being distributed across the stage, and this added so much to the ambiance of the show.
With the stage set up for the band, the lights dimmed, and the show was set in motion. María, the lead singer of the band, came out as a silhouette behind the white circle in the center of the stage and introduced the first song, Hamptons, from the latest release. She then went to the smaller side stage and sang a bit more before finally coming towards the front of the stage for their song Run Your Mouth, which is one of the more upbeat songs on Submarine. María was dancing and running across the stage to greet all the fans. The fans were also dancing and jumping to the beat of the song.
A highlight of the show was their song No One Noticed, which has recently gained a lot of popularity on TikTok due to a trend. Fans immediately got their phones out and sang the song to the top of their lungs with their friends. Another crowd favorite was Otro Atardecer, which was a collaboration they had with the renowned artist Bad Bunny that got the crowd moving and singing.
To close out their show, they sang Cariño, one of the first songs that made the band so well known. Seeing fans turn to their partners and friends to sing along was a heartwarming moment of shared joy and connection. With everyone’s hands still in the air, María delivered the final lyrics, and the show came to an end.
Everything about this show fully surpassed any prior assumptions I had. Every time I see them live, they are able to continue to improve the quality and production, and it is such an impressive thing to witness. The Marías know how to put on a show and make your night as dreamy as ever, so if you are looking to fully dive into a magical evening, I would recommend catching one of their shows.
