Instagram Live Concerts are Shining a Bright Light During Dark Times

Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus, just about every upcoming live show has been cancelled. While the whole world is bored at home, a lot of artists decided to start livestreams on Instagram just to talk to fans and keep them entertained. Chris Martin of Coldplay was one of the first artists to perform an Instagram Live concert for his followers and fans. He took song requests from fans in the comments and performed with just his piano at home. Martin teamed up with Global Citizen and the World Health Organization with his new segment titled #TogetherAtHome where many other artists, such as John Legend, Charlie Puth, and Niall Horan, followed in his footsteps. These artists encourage their millions of fans to stay inside and educate themselves about the virus and how they can help. The purpose of their Instagram Live concerts is to raise awareness and keep everyone safe while fans watch their favorite artists perform through their phones.

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello performed a beautiful and intimate concert together just with a guitar. While Cabello did have to postpone her upcoming tour, she did not disappoint with her incredible voice on Instagram Live. They sang a range of songs, including an Ed Sheeran cover, Shawn Mendes songs, and Camila Cabello songs. They finished strong with their hit song “Senorita” while sharing words of encouragement with their fans on how we can get through this tough time together.

Justin Bieber went on Instagram Live earlier this week to chat with some fans and play with face filters, which to be honest, wasn’t very entertaining. He seemed to have the same bland conversation with each fan and didn’t seem interested in what they had to say. A few days later, however, he redeemed himself with a very personal concert. He added fans to the livestream and sang each of them a song while playing piano. His voice sounded amazing, and the fans were in awe that they were chosen to participate on the Instagram Live. He sang acoustic versions of major hits from his first EP My World to his newest album Changes.

Swae Lee’s Instagram Live concert has been by far the most entertaining. He performed the Instagram Live concert exactly as he would an actual show. I have had the privilege of seeing Swae Lee perform five times, and his energy is always unmatched. He walked onto the “stage” during his livestream as DJ T-Jizzle was behind the scenes playing a crowd cheering noise that sounded just like it does at a live show. Swae Lee was dancing with a real mic in hand, and he pretended to jump into the crowd. He asked his viewers if a fan wanted to come on stage, and he added a boy to the livestream who looked like he was having a blast while dancing with Swae Lee on the screen. Lee had a total of 256,000 viewers in attendance on his Instagram Live concert. He threw out flowers into the “crowd” during his hit single with Post Malone “Sunflower,” and he even had someone from behind the camera throw bras at him, as if they were from women at a real show. His Instagram Live concert was super fun, and I hope he has another one soon.

Verizon is also hosting a live stream segment on Twitter called #PayItForwardLIVE that supports local communities. Be sure to catch Dave Matthews performing live from his living room tonight. It is sure to be a great show!
