One of the all time greatest musicians of this generation took stage on September 8 at Toyota Center in Houston, TX. John Mayer always knows how to put on a great show. In his Summer Tour 2019, Mayer has no openers and plays two whole sets himself and with his long-time great band featuring guitarist David Ryan Harris, bassist Pino Palladino, drummer Aaron Sterling and more. What’s so special about Mayer’s shows is he does not play the same set each night. Every city is gifted and surprised with a di ff erent setlist for their concert.
Mayer opened up with “Heartbreak Warfare” from his 2009 Battle Studies album followed by hit after hit from a mixture of old records and his newer music. The energy from the crowd as Mayer walks out is felt across the whole arena. Even though each song was spectacular, some notable stand outs from the first set were “Why Georgia,” “Love on the Weekend,” and “In the Blood.” He also played his newest single that just got released on September 5, 2019 titled “Carry Me Away.” Mayer finished the great first set with “Edge of Desire.” With each song, Mayer displayed his remarkable guitar skills effortlessly in front of a loud and excited crowd.
After a small intermission, Mayer came back on stage and is known to play a short acoustic set with the songs always highly anticipated by his big fans. In his Houston show, he played “Daughters,” “3×5,” and “Free Fallin’.” As great as his incredible solos on the electric guitar are, his acoustic performances are on another level as well. Mayer’s whole band then joins him again as they continue the show. They played more hits including “Still Feel Like Your Man,” “Stop This Train,” “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room,” and “Waiting on the World to Change.” Hearing all these songs live with the extended solos and more is a whole experience that cannot be compared to listening to the album recording. While playing “Dear Marie,” which was the finale before the encore, Mayer introduced and jams out with his band whom the show would not be possible without. They were appreciated with loud screams and applause from the crowd who were just given an amazing night of music. After more cheers from the audience as they await Mayer and his band’s return to stage, Mayer plays “Gravity,” showing o ff more of his superb ability in guitar and soothing vocals. He finished a great show on a high as everyone got on their feet with one of Mayer’s newer songs “New Light.”
It is no doubt that John Mayer is one of the most talented guitarists and artists of this generation. After more than 20 years in the business, he is still selling out arenas, releasing new music and putting on some of the best concerts anyone can perform. He is definitely a must see live in concert. Don’t miss him if he comes to a city near you!
