On August 29, Rascal Flatts’ 2019 Summer Playlist Tour took a stop at the Smart Financial Centre in Sugar Land, TX. Opening up the night was up and rising country star Jimmie Allen, performing hits from his album Mercury Lane such as current single “Make Me Want To” and number one debut single “Best Shot.” This was the song that changed Allen’s career, and he made sure to thank the crowd and country radio for all their support throughout his set. Allen is also a great songwriter, his telling of the backstories before starting some songs showed how humble and grounded he has remained with his rising success. He even covered some great country songs that have influenced him such as “Lucky Man” by Montgomery Gentry and “Sold” by John Michael Montgomery. Allen also did a short snippet of “Tequila” by Dan + Shay showcasing his superb vocals. Lastly, while singing his song “Underdogs,” Allen made his way through the crowd even going all the way up to the balcony section. Some people might not have known him before the concert, but there is no doubt he made thousands of new fans after his performance. Before he knows it, Jimmie Allen will be headlining his own shows in theaters like this one.
Next up is the trio everyone has waited for. Coming out to a loud cheer and applause from the crowd, Rascal Flatts started the night off with “These Days.” Right from the start, the vocals of Gary LeVox were exceptional. All the runs and notes he hits were perfect. Other standout performances were “Summer Nights,” “Fast Cars and Freedom,” and “My Wish.” After all these years, they are still putting out great music as they performed their newest single “Back to Life.” LeVox is not the only one in the trio with great vocals. While singing “Bless the Broken Road,” they each took a verse with bassist Jay DeMarcus starting off and guitarist Joe Don Rooney sounding great as well. This was definitely one of the crowd favorites from the night. Before the encore, Rascal Flatts performed one of their biggest songs “Life is a Highway,” which got the crowd dancing and singing along. It would not be a Rascal Flatts concert without hearing “What Hurts the Most.” The band came out to their encore with this song as LeVox went into the crowd to perform the song. Along with their own hits, which they could have gone another set with songs they were not able to fit in this one, they also covered “Do You Believe In Love” by Huey Lewis and the News and “Feels Like the First Time” by Foreigner. They also did a snippet of “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey and even covered “This Love” by Maroon 5. The trio closed the night off with “Here’s to You,” which is their anthem to their fans.
Rascal Flatts puts on such a great show. You would not want to miss out hearing their harmonies and vocals live if they come to a city near you. Check them out!
